Grade 321 is the basic austenitic 18/8 steel. It combines high strength along with resistance to scaling and aqueous corrosion. It has excellent weldability by all standard fusion methods and oxidation resistance in intermittent service up to 900 degrees centigrade.

A limitation of grade 321 is that titanium does not transfer well across a high tensile arc, so it is not recommended as a welding consumable.
